Baja, Mexico [Apr '10]

April 3rd
After the group picture we departed Horsepower Ranch.  It was really a wonderful stay and I must go back if I'm ever in that area again!  Since we're not pressed for time today, we're...oh, we're going to ride on the paved road again?  Fuck you, Racers and Ranchers.  With the Yamaha Warrior panting, we finally pull off the road into an actual gas station.  This is where I'm told by one of the group leaders, Lance Kane, that since a fellow rider, Sammy Hagar, bruised his ribs the day before, it will be Scotty Bloom (another group leader), Sammy, and I taking the short route back to the resort where we started.  Oh, "and the quad can't handle the terrain that everyone else will be riding on today."  Excuse me?  I should have dust-roosted you instead of the Penhall kid..

A few minutes after leaving the gas station, the three of us stopped at a fish taco stand for lunch in Ojos Negros.  OMG!  Fish tacos are now my favorite Mexican food!  Thanks Scotty!  We roll out again, making our way into the mountains.  Sammy is supposedly injured but I don't buy it because I can barely keep up with his short ass.  What a jip.  I wonder how much fun everyone else is having?  I started hanging back more to make them slow down and it did work.  What is the rush, people?  Last time I checked this is not the Baja 500!  We make it back with [surprise!] plenty of time and daylight to spare.  Scotty took me on some cool trails right outside of the resort area to kill time.  That was the most fun I had the whole trip--just playing around and not being in the massive group.
Fish tacos, anyone?

April 2nd

Well today was the big day!  My first ride in Baja!  I'm stoked--until I find out that I'm the only quad on this ride.  Ugh.  Now I'm sure to be treated as an inconvenience.  There is also a consensus in the group that I am inferior or a newbie because I'm on a quad.  I can't do single track obviously and the group organizer, Rudy, is telling me a way I can go that will dump me out at the meeting place where everyone will be after the single track section.  Thanks to two guys with massive Honda 650s that felt they couldn't handle the brutal single track on their big bikes, I didn't have to do that section alone.  Thanks Buddy & Jim!  (I'll be depending on these guys later, it turns out...).
A big bike for a big man (Jim is on the right).

Everyone meets up and we start to head to our lunch stop...or so we think.  Baja has just received massive rains about a week ago and it literally has changed the landscape--including the trails.  After having everyone twiddle their thumbs and listen to the two biggest egos in the group duke it out as it which way we all should go, we finally start doubling back to a supposed missed turn.  All fine and dandy, except I run out of gas.  And I'm in the back of the group.  One of the group leaders finally comes back after they realize the "quad guy" isn't with the group anymore..  He radios and sends Buddy back to give me some gas from his tank since he has one of the biggest in the group.
Which way?  Which wayyyy?!

We finally make it to the lunch stop (Buddy should have given me more gas because I ran out of gas again in Laguna Hanson).  Our lunch stop is famous for anyone who has ridden Baja in this area; it's called the Sawmill.  We fuel the machines up with $5-a-gallon gas and I fuel up on burritos, chips, and beer.
The most glamorous shot on the entire trip...

We press onward because time is of the essence due to us being "lost" for awhile.  However, we do make time for a beer stop.  It's literally just a cement block building with one 'service' window.. big enough to pass cans of Tecate beer through.  We slam a few brews and also snag some photo ops.
Tecate beer pit stop.

Oh, right!  We're pressed for time.. so what better way to make up time by...riding on the paved road!  How awesome...  Oh, it gets better...  The chase vehicle with everyone's clean clothes is nowhere to be found..  I loved eating dinner in my dusty clothes.  However, that was some delicious piece of beef!!  All bitching aside, this Horsepower Ranch is gorgeous!  The rooms are really nice also!  The Ranch has a fully stocked bar, game room, kitchen, great room with a big TV and fireplace.  Horsepower Ranch is nestled up in the valley in the mountains above Ensenada, the surrounding scenery is absolutely stunning!
Horsepower Ranch in all her glory.

March 31st & April 1st

Night has finally given away to day and it's April 1st.  And I'm still driving..  I'm zoning at this point because I've done around 500 miles without stopping.  My shift finally comes to an end and I make Jimmy drive into Mexico starting a little before Tecate.  We make it all the way to the resort where we will be spending the night before we depart and head to Horsepower Ranch.  We decide to quickly do a shakedown run with the machines.  Good thing because mine has an oil leak.  Jimmy patches it up and we head to bed.  Tomorrow's a big day!
